Este ensayo analiza las percepciones y apreciaciones a través de las cuales los profesores construyen una imagen de lo que significa ser maestro y el interés que los llevó a serlo. Los acercamientos cualitativos para la construcción de los datos se hicieron por medio de entrevistas y, para su análisis se utilizaron técnicas de análisis etnográfico entretejidas con el análisis del discurso. A partir del análisis de los discursos, es posible afirmar que los maestros no se adhirieron a la profesión docente de manera anticipada impulsados por una fuerza interna independiente de las condiciones objetivas de su existencia, sino que, el despertar del gusto por enseñar se gestó en las instituciones de formación docente y en el ejercicio mismo de la docencia. Dicho de otro modo, el interés por la profesión docente es histórico y se construye día a día. Insertos en la profesión, los maestros sienten que están hechos para ella, la valoran y construyen una imagen de lo que significa ser profesor de educación secundaria. Esta articula las percepciones y apreciaciones que construyen sobre su trabajo en relación con los estudiantes en el espacio pedagógico y la valoración que los otros hacen sobre su desempeño. This paper relates perceptions and insights through which teachers build an image of what it means to be a teacher and why they chose to be a teacher. They did not think about becoming part ofthe teaching profession in advance driven by an inner force independent of the objective conditions of their existence, but the their like and motivation teaching is growing when they go to teacher training institutions and during the same school year. In other words, interest in the teaching profession is historical and built day by day. Once they are involved in their profession, they feel ready to, value it and build an idea of what it means to be a high school teacher. This articulates perceptions and insights that teachers built about their work in relation to students in the educational field and the valuation that others make about their performance.
